About the Role

What You'll Do

Implement and maintain systems of communication, organization, documentation and evaluation to establish accountability in all areas of compliance oversight. Establish dialogue related to compliance with athletics staff members, institutional staff members outside athletic department (e.g. Admissions, Registrar, President’s Office, etc.) and outside groups (e.g. fans, ticket holders, alumni and athletics boosters).
Coordinate NCAA eligibility requirements for certification of student-athletes for initial, continuing, transfer, and/or amateur eligibility for sports other than football. Serve as the primary contact with NCAA Eligibility Center for incoming freshmen student-athlete eligibility for all sports other than football. Disseminate eligibility information to members of the coaching staff, Director of Athletics, Faculty Athletics Representative, Admissions and Registrar. Answer questions from these persons regarding eligibility issues. Answer questions from high school administrators, parents, and prospective student-athletes. Produce required reports and forms.
Oversee and implement the NCAA waiver process for eligibility, amateurism issues, medical hardships, legislative relief and student-athlete reinstatement.
Serve as the primary compliance representative for the NCAA Academic Progress Rate process.
Administer the playing season regulations for assigned sports . This includes, but is not limited to, working with coaches and respective sport administrators to declare the playing season in each sport, other than football, prior to the beginning of the institution’s playing season for that sport.
Coordinate the monitoring of playing and practice sessions and countable athletic related activities (CARA) to ensure compliance with NCAA rules and guidelines for assigned sports. Duties include random attendance and monitoring of team practices, monitoring student-athletes activities during summer period, and verification with the strength and conditioning staff and student-athletes.
Research rule interpretations for athletic department staff members, including researching questions regarding NCAA rules presented by coaching staff, athletic administrators and personnel from other departments.
Participate in NCAA rules education procedures and processes to assure understanding of NCAA regulations.
Provide rules interpretations for coaches and staff members, including researching questions regarding NCAA rules presented by coaching staff, athletic administrators, and personnel from other departments.
Assist with the investigation of NCAA rules violations as directed by the Senior Associate Athletics Director, Big 12 Conference and/or NCAA. Requires in-depth knowledge of rules.
Utilize the ARMS system to enhance monitoring, rules education and documentation management. Participate in necessary trainings and webinars to ensure detailed knowledge and functionality of the system.
Participate in various campus committees, and state and regional professional organizations. Actively participate in game day duties for football and other athletic events. Attend select competitions and practices to observe the coaches, student-athletes, and game personnel to ensure compliance with various regulations.
Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations; keep abreast of current information and changes in NCAA legislation.
Draft statistical, narrative, and/or other reports as requested by the Senior Associate Athletics Director.

Perform responsibilities related to the athletic compliance operations as assigned and documented by the general responsibility matrix established by the Senior Associate Athletics Director.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Senior Associate Athletics Director.
Report directly to the Senior Associate Athletics Director; ; must also work closely with all others involved with carrying out the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletic program.
Maintain knowledge of and comply with all rules, regulations, policies and guidelines of West Virginia University, the Big 12 Conference and the NCAA; must adhere to NCAA Bylaw 11.1 Conduct of Athletic Personnel. Failure to adhere to these policies will result in appropriate disciplinary action including possible suspension and termination.
Represent the University on the highest professional level with dignity, integrity, and strength of character and will exhibit ethical behavior; must respect the rights and dignity of individuals with sensitivity to problems that may arise from racial and ethnical differences.
Demonstrate a cooperative attitude towards all sports within the intercollegiate athletic program.
Possess the ability to adapt to any situation, make decisions and work independently; position must have the ability to build and maintain relationships with student-athletes, coaches, staff members and contractors; required to use creative abilities to develop new techniques and approaches in dealing with many issues controlled by this position; responsibilities of the position are ever-changing and require constant research and education. It also requires the ability to adapt to any situation and make decisions.
Manage sensitive and confidential information related to student-athletes, coaches and staff utilizing discretion and correct decisions. Failure to use proper discretion at required level could result in major and significant embarrassment to the University and/or have a significant impact on image, revenues and eligibility of student-athletes.
