A former McKinley High School football player is suing the Canton City School District and his former coaches in a federal lawsuit that claims they violated his civil rights when they coerced him to eat a pepperoni pizza against his religious beliefs.

The now 18-year-old former player and his parents, none of whom are identified by name in the lawsuit, are seeking millions of dollars for alleged violations of the player’s First and Fourteenth Amendment rights and the pain and suffering they say they have endured since May 24 when they say the player was inappropriately punished for missing a previous strength and conditioning workout.
