Iowa House passes ban on transgender girls playing K-12 and college girls' sports

Feb 22, 2022

Transgender women and girls would be banned from competing in girls' sports offered by Iowa's schools, colleges and universities, under a bill passed Monday by Iowa House lawmakers.

The House voted 55-39 Monday to pass the bill, with all but one Republican — Rep. Michael Bergan, R-Dorchester — voting in favor and every Democrat opposed.

The bill's Republican supporters say it's aimed at "protecting girls' sports" from what they say are unfair athletic advantages for transgender girls.
