< Back NHL Team Values Surge 19% With Rangers Leading Way Dec 28, 2022 Forbes unveiled its list of the most valuable NHL teams in 2022 — and the New York Rangers lead the group at $2.2 billion. It marks the eighth straight year the Blueshirts have owned the top spot. The NHL’s 32 teams are now worth a record $1.03 billion on average — a 19% increase year-over-year — behind increased media revenue and team-related transactions. • Silver: Record Deal For Pistons Coach Reflects Market Realities

< Back Silver: Record Deal For Pistons Coach Reflects Market Realities Jun 6, 2023 NBA commissioner Adam Silver has acknowledged that as far as coaching salaries are concerned, it’s open season. Speaking before Game 1 of the NBA Finals Thursday in Denver, Silver said Monty Williams’ six-year, $78.5 million contract with the Detroit Pistons reflected the league’s market reality: Coaches’ compensation isn’t collectively bargained and governed like it is for players. Williams’ deal — signed this week after the 2022 Coach of the Year was fired by Phoenix last month — is the largest ever for an NBA coach and reportedly could reach $100 million with options and incentives included. The pact immediately amplified concerns that smaller-market clubs could lose out in future bidding wars for top coaching talent. “We’re able to negotiate collectively with the players because they choose to negotiate as a union,” Silver said. “The coaches haven’t made that election … teams compete individually, and it’s where the marketplace takes us.” Source: Front Office Sports https://frontofficesports.com/silver-record-deal-for-pistons-coach-reflects-market-realities/ Previous Next

  • Cameraman wanders onto track, impedes steeplechase at World Athletics Championships

< Back Cameraman wanders onto track, impedes steeplechase at World Athletics Championships Jul 19, 2022 This could have turned out much worse. In a Track and Field World Championships that's making repeated headlines for what's gone wrong, another bizarre incident took center stage during Monday's competition, this time in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase. In an event built around obstacles, runners ran into an unplanned impediment on the track — a cameraman. As competitors still bunched up in the early stages of the race ran down the stretch of the Hayward Field track, a cameraman stood in Lane 2 with his back turned to the field. Runners faced a choice. Go left or go right. And hope to not get knocked down. Fortunately for the runners, the camera operator somehow remained still, and they all ran around him without further incident. After the race, U.S. runner Evan Jager explained his thought process when he saw the cameraman. • Alex Ovechkin passes Gordie Howe for No. 2 on NHL's all-time goals list

< Back Alex Ovechkin passes Gordie Howe for No. 2 on NHL's all-time goals list Dec 23, 2022 Alex Ovechkin moved one step closer to the most elusive record in hockey on Friday, ripping home two goals to give him 802 for his career, passing the great Gordie Howe for second on the NHL's all-time goals list. Ovechkin's first tally came in the first period, as he took a drop pass from Dylan Strome and fired a shot past Winnipeg Jets goaltender David Rittich. He passed Howe with an empty-net goal in the third period to seal Washington's 4-1 victory. Howe's son, Mark, recorded a video message to congratulate Ovechkin on his milestone goal. Ovechkin currently sits 92 goals back of Wayne Gretzky's all-time mark of 894 and has a legitimate chance of breaking what appeared to be an untouchable record. The Russian superstar has 22 goals and 40 points on the season, showing no signs of slowing down in his age-37 campaign. He joined the 800-goal club earlier this month when he recorded a hat trick against the Chicago Blackhawks. • Tom Brady or Greg Olsen? Fox has a future decision to make on its No. 1 analyst

< Back Tom Brady or Greg Olsen? Fox has a future decision to make on its No. 1 analyst Jan 24, 2023 The obvious storyline for Sunday’s NFC championship game centers on unexpected breakout stars. There is Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, 24, who entered the season with questions about his ability, only to become an MVP candidate whom his head coach now compares to no less than Michael Jordan. There is San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, 23, who was a third-stringer after being the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and is now looking for his eighth straight victory as a starter. And then there is … Greg Olsen, 37, the retired, mostly small-market tight end who, due to a wild shake-up in the NFL broadcasting ranks last year, became Fox’s lead game analyst and has quickly become a viewer and critic favorite for his insightful and easygoing manner. • Georgia's obliteration of TCU leads to lowest ratings in college football title game history

< Back Georgia's obliteration of TCU leads to lowest ratings in college football title game history Jan 11, 2023 It appears fans did not feel like watching most of Monday's College Football Playoff title game between Georgia and TCU, and it's difficult to blame them. The 65-7 show of force from Georgia on its way to a second consecutive national championship drew only 17.223 million viewers for ESPN's family of channels, according to Austin Karp of Sports Business Journal. That number reportedly makes the Bulldogs' win the least-watched college football title game since the beginning of the BCS in 1999. ESPN's main broadcast reportedly averaged 16.6 million viewers, though the "Field Pass with The Pat McAfee Show," in which the former NFL punter and some of his friends watched and reacted to the game from the field, was a relative success, with 423,000 viewers. • Lionel Messi Is Driving Season Ticket Sales for Other MLS Teams

< Back Lionel Messi Is Driving Season Ticket Sales for Other MLS Teams Sep 2, 2023 Lionel Messi played his first away match in an Inter Miami kit on August 6 at FC Dallas, which generated 10 times the normal gameday revenue at Toyota Stadium. The legendary star scored two goals in the Leagues Cup game, including a stunning free kick in the 85th minute to tie the contest, which the Herons eventually won on penalty kicks. In the three weeks after, FC Dallas says it sold more 2024 season tickets than in any three-week period in club history. The club has sold as many season ticket packages at this point in the year as it did by December of 2022 — and that 60% of those sales alone occurred since August 6. • Bills S Jordan Poyer cancels charity golf event due to backlash over location at Donald Trump course

< Back Bills S Jordan Poyer cancels charity golf event due to backlash over location at Donald Trump course Jun 28, 2023 Buffalo Bills safety Jordan Poyer canceled his annual golf charity event Saturday, he announced on Instagram, after several teams and sponsors pulled out of the event. The reasoning for the sudden issue, he said, was due to the event’s location. Poyer’s charity event was set to take place next month at Trump National Doral Golf Club in South Florida, which is owned by former President Donald Trump. It’s unclear how many sponsors or teams actually withdrew from the tournament. The event, according to the Buffalo News, was set to benefit the ECMC Foundation. Poyer described them as a “big sponsor,” but the group said they were just the beneficiary of the event.
